The White Rose, explores what it means to connect with people from the past who inexplicably – and mystically – reach out to us in the here and now, to help us find our own voices in turbulent times. The show tells the story of a modern-day university student who discovers a forgotten document from the 1950s, buried deep in the archives. This sets her on a path of bringing awareness to an inspiring but tragic instance of student resistance in Nazi Germany, known as the White Rose. As our protagonist gets to know the members of the White Rose through their own writings, she develops a connection with them. However, as she learns more, her perception of them as untouchable heroes is shattered. As secrets, contradictions, betrayals, and private moments of courage come to light, they become all the more human – and real. This is a haunting, dark academia musical, with a show-within-a-show structure and a rich sound world that evokes the historical period. Think The Sound of Music meets Indecent. This is a full-length show with no intermission. It’s an ensemble piece, featuring 8 actors (some of whom play instruments) and 2-4 additional instrumentalists who are situated on stage. Over the last 8 years, I’ve done several workshops and readings, including one at NMI after going through their Core Curriculum. I also released a concept album and a podcast about the show (2022), and I have a documentary in progress. In 2023, I produced a fully-staged workshop production that ran for three performances at the Odyssey Theater in Los Angeles, in collaboration with Director/Dramaturg Diana Wyenn. This project was sparked by an unexpected discovery Jennifer made in the archives while doing research for her senior honors thesis in Russian literature, and has led her to create not only a stage musical, but also a concept album and podcast (released in 2022) and a documentary (in progress). Jennifer also performs as a pianist and singer and in 2024 released her debut solo album Piano Girl, a musical memoir/song cycle featuring classical piano works interspersed with original, autobiographical songs. Previously, Jennifer composed the music for the 15-minute musical Fears Anonymous, which debuted at the 2018 Hollywood Fringe Festival, presented by New Musicals Inc. In addition to being a producing artist, Jennifer is a leading arts entrepreneurship educator, speaker, and coach.
