19th-century upstate New York. A haughty city girl, humiliated that the instructor in a finishing-school finds a rustic girl more appealing than she, finds herself in a duel-to-the-end, first in a spelling-bee, then in a rehearsal of Schiller’s tragedy of Mary Stuart, and finally in a love-letter prank gone terribly, farcically wrong.
